A Better Understanding of Faith

“Now faith is the [a]substance of things hoped for, the [b]evidence of things not seen.” – Hebrews 11:1 is often quoted as the definition of faith, but it is not. The verse does give us insight to how faith operates. If there is anything that will manifest that is not seen or hoped for, the substance and evidence of it will come by faith.

The definition of faith is found a couple of verses down. “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” Two important facts listed here that gives us the definition of faith:

  1. God created all things by His word. “Worlds” says that God is the creator of all things -period. Since God is the creator of all things (Elohim) that means that all things are created things. Who then would have the final authority? The Creator or the created things? God of course.
  2. We live in two dimensions. The things visible were made by the invisible. This says that there are two realms one that is seen(physical), and the other, the realm of the unseen(spiritual).  Since the “physical” was created by the “spiritual” we now understand the creative order. The spiritual realm controls the natural realm.

Our faith is founded upon what God has said – His word alone. Too often, we try standing upon what God we believe God can do. The problem with that approach is that God may or may not do exactly what He has done in the past. He may not do it in the timing of what he’s done in the past.

Here’s why it is crucial to have a fervent prayer life. We must know in our hearts what God is saying to us about our circumstances because that is what we have to stand on. When we understand what God has said about who we are in Him, when we focus upon the truth that God cannot lie and that He keeps His word no matter what, our faith stands strong.

Faith in God is not our having faith that God can do something but our ability to stand upon what God has said/is saying to us in our present circumstances. As Romans 10:17 states “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” – Bishop Eddie Gross
